Prerequisites for Apprenticeship

Prerequisites

An apprenticeship with the IBEW Local 213 is a five-year program. To apply for an apprenticeship with us, you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Electrical Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) Program offered through our Joint Training committee or another electrical foundation program offered through an accredited training institute (e.g. BCIT, Kwantlen, UFV, OKC); Graduates from these accredited programs are requested most often when our union contractors are hiring.

Or

  • Be an indentured apprentice with Electrical Work Level 1 or higher from an approved technical training school (e.g. BCIT, Kwantlen, UFV, OKC) plus a minimum of 900 hours worked (showing on your ITA transcript);

Or

  • Grade 12 with successful completion of the following three (3) courses: English 12 (or equivalent), Pre-Calculus 12 (or Principles of Math 12) and Physics 11.

Good electricians require mathematical and mechanical aptitude, an analytical approach to problem-solving, physical strength, manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination and an ability to work at heights. Additional skills include an ability to read and interpret drawings and electrical code specifications. Electrical workers are knowledgeable about computerized machinery and efficient with hand tools. Since electrical wires are colour-coded, good eyesight and colour vision are vital. If you can complete the five-year program, and pass an interprovincial standards exam, you will receive a Certificate of Qualification, with a Red Seal endorsement recognized across Canada, and a Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Program Costs

EJTC purchases block training seats from our partners BCIT and OKC. EJTC apprentices do not have a waitlist in order to complete their training. The cost of Levels 2, 3, and 4 technical training are set by the institutions.
